    The really big danger to the U.S. and global financial system is the gargantuan and growing mountain of derivatives – which the Bank for International Settlements now puts at $1.2 quadrillion dollars. AIG has now been given $180 billion, with a good portion of that money going to Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank and a list covering one whole page. These are counterparties to insurance contracts (derivatives) written by AIG, which, like money given to the banks, is supposed to keep the world’s financial system afloat.

    But, as large as these bailout funds are, they are like a few drops in the ocean. As the derivatives implode, there will be no end to the monies given to AIG, which has on its books trillions of dollars in OTC derivatives and hundreds of billions of subprime mortgages. AIG is just the tip of the iceberg of a corrupt, out of control, incestuous system between Wall Street and Washington, wherein billions in taxpayer moneys are funneled into the big banks and Wall Street firms; hundreds of millions go back to politicians in Washington in the form of campaign contributions, bribes and other forms of enrichment, and the U.S. taxpayer gets stuck with trillions in new debts.
